A completely reimagined Tyrolean Folktale of a girl and a skull in five parts. Stark images in muted tones and Jon Klassen’s signature writing style carry the story along, a haunting dance through the pages. A story of an unlikely friendship with a suspenseful backdrop. Otilla stumbles on old, seemingly abandoned house inhabited by the skull, a lovely matter of fact character, who welcomes her in from the cold. He gives her a home and she gives him protection.
Perfect for your older elementary and middle school readers looking for a little suspense and spook in their books.
As with any story of skeletons, big conversations about death and the afterlife may come up so it’s always best to give this (and any book) a quick read through to the end to make sure it’s right for your child. After doing so, I decided to not yet read this to my little one but I still absolutely loved it myself! Themes of running away from home, death, and being pursued by a headless skeleton all felt like a little too much at their age but I look forward to reading it together in a few years.
